On June 1, 2025, the sixth day of the fifth lunar month in the year of the Snake, the abbot of Canada’s Xing Wu  Zen Temple, happily accepted his 32nd disciple at the Xing Wu Zen Temple’s Buddhist hall in Vancouver. The ceremony of accepting disciples was solemn and dignified. The Buddhist hall was filled with the sound of Sanskrit, which was solemn and magnificent. The disciples, lay Buddhists and their families witnessed together this auspicious moment of the continuation of this traditional Dharma lineage.
Master Xing Wu worshipped Buddha devoutly: “Grateful for the Buddha’s grace, our relationship as master and disciple is bound by destiny. Today is the auspicious day to accept Yongnu as my 32nd disciple. His Dharma name is Yongnu. Amitabha!

Master Xingwu lit incense and worshipped Buddha, led his disciples to pay homage to the Three Jewels according to the ritual, and gave the Three Refuges ritual.

The new disciple respectfully receives the Dharma name Yongnu and accepts the Dharma master’s incense offering to ward off disasters and eliminate karma.

The master sprinkled the water for purification.

The master recited the “Three Refuges” “I take refuge in the Buddha, I take refuge in the Dharma, I take refuge in the Sangha…” The disciples followed the master’s instructions, worshiped the Buddha according to the dharma law and regulations, and formally took refuge in the Three Jewels and Buddhism.

The master holds a precept board in his hand to help his disciples eliminate karma and increase blessings.

The refuge in the Three Jewels ends and the ceremony of paying homage to the master begins. The disciple performs the ceremony of kneeling three times and kowtow nine times to the master. The disciple bowed and called “Master” loudly. The Master responded: “Stand up.” Then the disciple knelt in front of the Master for a long time and listened to his teachings.

Master Shi Xing Wu sat upright and gave instructions to his disciples: “Today, I formally accept you as my disciple and convert you to Buddhism. You must strictly abide by the Three Refuges, Five Dependences and Ten Virtues of Buddhism. You must always be compassionate and kind to offer to the Buddha, the Dharma and the monks. You must listen to the master’s teachings and pass on the master’s Dharma, kung fu and charity. You must respect the master and your fellow brothers and sisters, support each other, learn from each other, and be kind and compassionate to society, family and all living beings. Can you do it?

The disciple Yongnu responded loudly: “I can do it!”

Master continued to teach:

“I now accept you as my 33rd  generation disciple. Welcome to join the Xingwu Zen Temple family. I hope you will learn more about traditional Chinese culture, Chinese, Buddhism, and Kung Fu. Be more humble, learn more, work harder, and make constant progress.”

Master Xingwu gave his disciple Yongnu a string of Buddhist beads and Haiqing one.

Master Xing Wu teaches his disciples how to put on and take off clothes correctly.

The disciple-accepting ceremony ended successfully, and I was filled with joy! Starting today, disciple Yong Nu officially becomes the 33rd  generation disciple of Master Shi Xing Wu. He formally converts to the Three Jewels and Buddhism. From now on, he will follow his master, Master Shi Xing Wu, into the right path of Buddhism.

Master Shi Xing Wu became a monk at Shaolin Temple in Songshan since he was young, and his inheritance is orderly. For decades, he has been spreading the Dharma and saving people with affinity. He has been preaching in Canada for more than 20 years and is deeply respected by believers. Congratulations to Master Xing Wu for recruiting many disciples. May the Dharma lineage continue, the Zen light shine everywhere, and all living beings be bathed in the Dharma rain and their wisdom be enhanced.

According to the “Bodhisattva Sutra”:

A disciple is one who has good seeds, possesses the root of wisdom, respects the Buddha’s Dharma, has a clear mind and nature, makes offerings to the Master, is willing to follow the Master throughout his life, carries forward the Master’s great aspirations, and inherits the Master’s mantle.

The disciples who want to become a master must possess the “Three Refuges, Five Refuges, and Ten Good Deeds.” These are the precepts established by the Buddha.

In order to teach disciples to follow the rules and uphold them, it is a panacea to restrain the mind and body, stop evil and do good. After taking refuge in the Three Jewels, you can receive the Five Precepts, become a disciple of the Buddha, accumulate good roots, and move toward the Buddha’s path.

Three refuges: refuge in the Buddha, refuge in the Dharma, and refuge in the Sangha.

The Five Rules: Do not kill, do not steal, do not engage in sexual misconduct, do not lie, and do not drink alcohol.

The Ten Good Deeds: Do not kill, do not steal, do not engage in sexual misconduct, do not speak harshly, do not speak nonsense, do not lie, do not gossip, do not be greedy, do not be angry, and do not be deluded.

Congratulations to the junior brother, Yongnu, for his self-purification of Buddha nature, his joy in entering Buddhism, and following his master in martial arts and Buddhism. We wish our fellow practitioners to achieve happiness and wisdom as soon as possible.

              Namo Amitabha!
